Summer Time Sail
It was early August, the water was hot and calm. This usually means the sailfish are long gone because they prefer cold water in the 75 degree range. We set out off of Ocean Reef Club, Key Largo, Fl in search of some mahi mahi. We just hit the 2000ft water line and I saw a single white bird about 20ft off the water. Most people would have ignored this and thought that it was just flying. However with years of experience I knew better. I told the driver to head towards it. We slowed the boat down to 5kts. I was trolling two rods both of them had rigged ballyhoo with a small skirt on top. As I was watching the spread I saw one of the dead ballyhoos jump. Than I saw a bill!! I yelled Sailfish than picked up the rod and put it in free spool for 2 seconds. Than I immidietly put the drag on strike and set the hook. 30 minutes later Richie the owners son caught his first sailfish! Plus 15 mahis and 4 triple tail!!! Such a great day.
